A Message From Our Co-Founders

While today’s main focus is gratitude, it can also be prime time for openness, humor and creativity to shine. In other words, Thanksgiving’s at its best when we keep it weird.

For some, weird is claiming a spot at the Kids Table for the 40th consecutive Turkey Day. For others, it’s piling up on Aunt Jenny’s mysterious side dish, against better judgment. Every Thanksgiving week for the past 25 years, our family has welcomed the weird by way of an all-out ultimate frisbee tournament (relatives vs. unrelated friends) called Marie’s Cup, named for a beloved aunt who left us too soon. During these muddy, bloody, and sometimes snowy showdowns, legends have been made, hammies pulled, legacies defined.

But gridiron glory is only an appetizer for what comes after—when both teams and extended families gather to roast, toast and parody-song each other into a hapless but howling heap of has-beens, or as we prefer to be called, “legends.” Our musically-inclined cousins are weirdly willing to back the worst front men and women in rock history, knowing well that the quirks are what make it feel real and alive, imperfectly perfect, and just wrong enough to be right.

A slow-hang holiday potluck always hits the spot, but long after the leftovers disappear, we’ll savor the flavor of spontaneous moments that happened because we gave ourselves permission to embrace the weird.
